Multiplication practice

This week the 3rd grade classes had an opportunity to practice their multiplication facts during one of our centers. Here is the video. The students threw at the various objects. More video will be coming next week.

Also this week, the fourth and fifth grade students this week have been practicing some striking skills. During volleyball the students strike the ball with their hands, arms, and fingers. We are presently playing a fun volleyball game called 4-square volleyball.

The students also practiced striking with a paddle. We have used plastic balls as well as foam balls, but the favorite object to strike has been the badminton birdie.

Challenge Week -- Turtle Shell Bridge

The 4th and 5th grade classes completed another challenge week. This challenge involved crossing a piranha infested tributary of the Amazon River. The group's goal was to cross the river without touching it. The whole group and all of the equipment needed to get across. If anyone touched, then the whole group needed to start over. The students needed to balance on the "turtle shells" left over from the piranha feeding frenzy. They could use two "sticks" to help along the way.

Here is a short video clip of the kids in action.

Lowercase letters a through e example

Here is clip of the video Mr. Lepisto created for the kindergarten and 1st grade students. The classroom teachers use the Zoophonics program to learn the letters and letter sounds. This video reinforces that as well as giving the students a visual of the correct printing pathway for the corresponding letter. The students love to follow the animal and then get a chance to practice their emerging throwing skills as well!

Reinforcing literacy in physical education

One of our goals in physical education at Nicolet is to reinforce literacy during our center weeks. During centers, the students practice particular skills for about 4 to 5 minutes and then rotate to a new center.

Mr. Lepisto created a video used with a throwing center where the kindergarten and 1st grade students follow an animal making a letter. The students try to throw a ball at the animal as it moves through the correct printing pathway.
Here is a video of some kindergarten and 1st grade students engaged in the throwing center with lowercase letters and pathways.
