In this activity the students work together to find five like objects that are hidden underneath a "turtle shell". Before the student can look under the shell, he or she must toss a beanbag into a basket. If he or she makes it, then he or she gets to look under the shell. If the object matched the one he needs then he takes it back to his group. If it is a different object, then it stays under the shell. If the shot is missed, then the student cannot look under the shell. This cooperative activity works on a number of skills besides throwing. The students need to come up with a strategy to find the objects. Also, memory skills and communication skills really come into play, since the teammates can tell each other which shells to pick or not pick.
Here is a short video of a first grade class in action.
This week the fourth and fifth grade students learned a fast paced game called flickerball. It combines some of the skills of football, basketball, and even soccer. We are getting ready to start some basketball skills, however with the snow day this week and a concert, some of the 4th and 5th grade classes haven't had physical education class yet. Every grade will be working on basketball skills next week.
The kindergarten, first and second grade students participated in a cooperative memory game activity this week. I will post some pictures/video of the activity on Friday!
With this short week of class the students participated in activity centers during physical education. One of the centers the students really enjoyed was a throwing center where they had a chance to throw at moving objects projected onto the wall. Here is a short video showing some of the students in action.
The challenge this week was Beach Crossing. In this challenge the students had to cross a beach of burning sand carrying a boat to reach shark infested waters. The boat could not touch the sand (floor) nor could any person. Each team member had one lily pad that could touch the sand. Only one person could stand on a lily pad at a time. If anyone or the boat touched the sand then the whole group needed to start over. The ultimate goal was to get all team members on the boat in the water. Here are some pictures of some 5th graders solving the challenge.

This week the third, fourth, and fifth grade students participated in a number of soccer lead up games that focused on the basic soccer skills. Next week, we will be playing some mini-soccer games in the gym.
The kindergarten through second grade classes had fun using the hula hoop in numerous ways. We also focused on moving safely in a self-space as well as in a general space. Next week these students will use some smaller rings to explore movement pathways as well as throwing and catching to themselves and to partners.
